Carbon to Sea Initiative

We are proud to announce that Carbon to Sea is collaborating with PML Applications to develop a comprehensive framework for monitoring environmental impacts in ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) field trials. As the commercial arm of the world-renowned Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), PML Applications provides cutting-edge scientific research, consultancy services, and innovative technologies to support a sustainable future for our ocean.

OAE is recognised for its significant potential among carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions. However, many questions relating to its wider interactions with the marine environment remain. Establishing a clear understanding of OAE’s environmental impacts is crucial for enabling cross-sector collaboration and addressing the pressing challenges of the climate crisis.

PML Applications collaboration with Carbon to Sea aims to address these uncertainties by establishing a robust framework that includes a code of conduct and a common set of high-quality, scientific protocols for addressing environmental impacts during OAE field trials. The framework will include core principles and recommendations for establishing OAE field research sites, initial modelling, chemistry analysis, and environmental impact assessments.

The goal of this framework is to foster collaboration and provide reliable guidelines for researchers, regulators, industry stakeholders and practitioners who wish to evaluate the environmental merits of OAE approaches. This will support the responsible advancement of this emerging climate solution.

Carbon to Sea and PML Application’s collaboration on the OAE field trial framework is a significant milestone in the ocean-climate field that will positively impact the work of scientists, policymakers, industry leaders, and nonprofit organizations. We are excited to see the benefits of this framework and will share updates as our collaborative work develops.

We are eager to see the benefits of this framework as it is developed, and we will share updates as they become available. Follow along with updates on Carbon to Sea’s LinkedIn, blog, and PML Application’s LinkedIn.
