Grantees, Partners, and Engagement Opportunities
Carbon to Sea brings together leading scientists and partners to evaluate OAE as potentially the most cost-efficient, high-impact way to draw down billions of tons of legacy carbon from the atmosphere.
As an organization, we have no expectations of a return on our investment beyond potential benefits to society and our planet. Therefore, we fund research with an outcome-agnostic approach.
Funding scientific advancement
Broadly speaking, we aim to evaluate OAE’s efficiency as a carbon removal solution, environmental safety, and scalability. To answer these questions as quickly but rigorously as possible, we fund projects along four interrelated channels, shown on the right.
In addition to our priorities, we also support work to build a more responsible sector for ocean-based CDR and engage policymakers in support of OAE research. We continue to actively fundraise to support our ongoing work and vision for the OAE field.
Foundational Research
Laboratory, mesocosm, and modeling studies that allow researchers to test hypotheses in highly controlled environments
Field Trials
Small-scale, in-situ experiments to test the robustness of findings in the real world and optimize observational and modeling capabilities
Techno-economic and life cycle analyses
Establishing a comprehensive system to independently verify and monitor major OAE pathways
Technology Development
Prototype developments that overcome the most critical scaling bottlenecks and cost drivers.

Subscribe to the Plan Sea podcast
“Plan Sea” is a podcast that investigates challenges and opportunities in ocean-based climate solutions, including carbon dioxide removal, solar radiation management, and other geoengineering approaches. Interviewers and guests explore questions and offer insights on the scientific, technical, legal, and social aspects of this emerging field.
Plan Sea is co-hosted by Wil Burns, Co-Director of the Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal at American University, and Anna Madlener, MRV Manager at Carbon to Sea. The podcast is funded by Carbon to Sea.

Events
In 2024, Carbon to Sea hosted our first annual convening in Washington, D.C. The four-day event brought together leaders from academia, the private sector, philanthropy, and government to share findings, connect, and accelerate knowledge sharing across disciplines. We look forward to future in-person opportunities to connect with our grantees, partners, and other stakeholders and drive progress toward ocean-based climate solutions.
The full event agenda can be found here. We will update with announcements about future events on this page.
Operational Partners
Firms and experts essential for the successful delivery of our programs.
Grantees
Organizations that are investigating key program questions and have regular progress check-ins with us.
